Reflections on my academic year at the College of Europe in Brugge (Bruges) Belgium in 1967/68
WINDMILLS
This post is just a short atmosphere piece. The photos are from my year at the College in 1967/8 and are from the Brugge/Damme area.
I normally associate windmills with Holland and Clogs, but Flanders has its share. The photo above shows that they can sometimes form a useful background. In this case it's troth pledging involving an Italian "celebrant" with pledgers coming from Italy and as far away as Canada.
WARNING: The tableau in the photo above is purely for demonstration purposes!
Approaching Le Moulin Blanc on the ramparts of Damme. In 1837 it replaced an older wooden mill which had been there for centuries and which originally belonged to the Counts of Flanders. In 1267 the Count's family had made it over to the town on condition they were paid the equivalent of half the value of what it produced - presumably in perpetuity.
